How to Get Rid of an Old Mattress Without Getting Fleeced

New bed's coming Thursday. The old one is still sitting in the room, sagging in the middle and smelling like 2011. Here's how to move it out without overpaying somebody to do a job that takes one truck and one buddy.

Option 1: Municipal Bulk Pickup

Most cities and counties run a bulk-item pickup, either free a few times a year or for a modest fee. Call your local sanitation department or check the county website. Many require the mattress to be bagged in plastic before it hits the curb — that's a bed bug ordinance, not a suggestion, and they'll leave it if you skip it.

Option 2: Recycling

A mattress is mostly steel, foam, and wood — all recyclable. Some states run recycling programs funded by a small fee you already paid at purchase. Mattress Recycling Council programs operate in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon with drop-off sites that take units free of charge.

Option 3: Donation

If the mattress is clean, structurally sound, and stain-free, some shelters, veterans' housing programs, and church ministries will take it. Call first. Nobody wants a broken-down bed, and most charities are legally barred from accepting soiled bedding.

Option 4: Haul It Yourself

• Bag it in a mattress disposal bag before it leaves the bedroom
• Fold and ratchet-strap a foam mattress; a hybrid goes flat in the bed of a truck
• Transfer stations typically charge a small per-item fee — call ahead for hours
• Never illegally dump it. Fines run into the hundreds and it's just trashy behavior

What About Retailer Haul-Away?

Plenty of retailers offer removal for a fee at delivery. It's convenient. It's also often the priciest route for something a pickup truck solves in twenty minutes. Compare it against your county's bulk-pickup fee before you check that box.
