Mattress Firmness Guide: Why Medium Firm Wins for Most Americans

Soft, medium, firm — the labels are marketing. Here's what firmness actually does to your spine, and how sleeping position and body weight should decide it for you.

Firmness is not support. Firmness is how the surface feels in the first few seconds. Support is whether your spine stays in line for eight hours. A soft bed can be well supported. A rock-hard bed can leave your lower back unsupported. Don't confuse them at the showroom.

The Practical Scale

  • Soft (3-4/10): deep sink, best for lightweight strict side sleepers
  • Medium (5-6/10): balanced contour, good for combination sleepers
  • Medium firm (6-7/10): the broad sweet spot — supportive with real pressure relief
  • Firm (8+/10): minimal give, mainly for heavier stomach and back sleepers

Match It to How You Sleep

  • Side sleepers need enough give at hip and shoulder to keep the spine straight — medium to medium firm
  • Back sleepers need lumbar contact without a hammock sag — medium firm
  • Stomach sleepers need the hips held up — medium firm to firm
  • Combination sleepers need a surface that lets them turn — medium firm with some bounce

Body Weight Changes the Number

Firmness ratings assume an average build. Heavier sleepers compress a mattress further, so a medium can behave like a soft — go one step firmer. Lighter sleepers don't compress the comfort layers much, so a firm can feel like a plank — go one step softer.

Where the Patriot Bed Lands

Medium comfort, built on a pocketed coil support system in a 12" quilted hybrid. It's the setting that serves the most Americans honestly: enough contour for side sleepers, enough steel underneath for back and stomach sleepers, and edge support so the whole surface stays usable.

If you have a diagnosed back condition, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about position and support before you buy on a stranger's recommendation.

"Buy support first. Firmness is just how it says hello."
