Most bad mattress purchases aren't about comfort — they're about size. People buy the bed that was on sale instead of the bed that fits their room, their body, and their base. Here's the straight math.
Standard U.S. Mattress Dimensions
- Twin — 38" x 75". Kids' rooms, bunk setups, guest corners.
- Twin XL — 38" x 80". Five extra inches of length; also what you pair for a split king.
- Full — 54" x 75". One adult with room to sprawl; tight for two.
- Queen — 60" x 80". The American default. Two adults in a 10' x 10' room or larger.
- King — 76" x 80". Two adults plus a kid or a dog. Wants a 12' x 12' room.
- California King — 72" x 84". Four inches narrower, four inches longer. For tall folks and long rooms.
Room Size Rules of Thumb
Leave at least 24 inches of walking space on the sides you use and 30 inches in front of a dresser with drawers. Measure the doorway and any stair turn before you buy — a 12-inch hybrid in a king is heavy and it does not fold.

If You're Going Adjustable
Two things change. First, split king (two Twin XL bases side by side) lets each person raise their own head without arguing about it. Second, your sheets need to survive the movement — fitted sheets with corner bands stay put when the head articulates, standard sheets pop off.
- Couples with different sleep schedules: split king on an adjustable base.
- Tall sleepers over 6'2": Cal King or Twin XL for length.
- Small rooms and single sleepers: Queen is still the best value per square foot.
