Snoring, Sleep Apnea, and Why Veterans Are Raising Their Heads

Sleep apnea hits veterans at far higher rates than the general population. Here's how head elevation works, what an adjustable base actually changes, and when to stop guessing and see a doctor.

If your spouse has started sleeping in the guest room, or you wake up at 5 a.m. feeling like you did three tours the night before, snoring may not be the joke everybody treats it as.

It's Bigger Among Those Who Served

Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common service-connected conditions among veterans. Years of noise exposure, deployment sleep debt, injuries, and weight changes stack the deck. The Department of Veterans Affairs treats diagnosed sleep apnea as a claimable condition — talk to your VSO if you've never filed.

What Head Elevation Actually Does

Lying flat lets the tongue and soft tissue fall back into the airway. Raising the head of the bed a few degrees uses gravity to keep that airway more open. It's the same reason people with acid reflux sleep inclined — and reflux and apnea often travel together.

  • A modest head incline can reduce snoring intensity for many sleepers
  • Elevation also helps reflux, sinus drainage, and post-surgery swelling
  • Wedge pillows work but slide; a powered base holds the angle all night
  • Zero-gravity presets take pressure off the lower back at the same time

Where a Bed Helps and Where It Doesn't

Straight talk: an adjustable base is a comfort and symptom tool. It is not a treatment for diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, and it does not replace a CPAP machine your doctor prescribed. If you snore heavily, gasp awake, or your partner has watched you stop breathing, get a sleep study. Then use the bed to make the therapy more bearable.

Our adjustable bases pair with the Patriot Bed and run wireless remotes with programmable presets, so you can set your incline once and hit one button every night.

"Get the study. Then get the angle right."
