How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress? Straight Answers, No Sales Pitch

Most Americans sleep on a bed years past its service life because it still 'looks fine.' Here's the honest checklist for when it's actually done.

You'd replace a set of tires at the wear bars without a second thought. You spend more hours on your mattress than in your truck, and most people ride it until the springs are talking back.

The General Rule

Most quality mattresses have a useful life of roughly 7 to 10 years. Cheap all-foam beds fade faster — often 5 to 7. A well-built hybrid with a proper coil unit sits at the top of that range, especially if you rotate it and use a real foundation.

The Real Test: Five Questions

  • Do you wake up stiffer than when you went to bed? That's support failure, not age.
  • Is there a visible body impression deeper than about an inch and a half? That's a warranty-grade sag.
  • Do you sleep better in a hotel or at your kid's place? That's your bed telling on itself.
  • Do you feel your partner move every time they roll? Coil or foam fatigue.
  • Are allergies or congestion worse in the morning? Old mattresses collect what you'd rather not think about.

Two or more yeses and you're past due. One yes might be fixable with a proper base or a rotation.

Make the Next One Last

  • Use a supportive foundation or platform with slats no more than about three inches apart. Bad support voids most warranties.
  • Rotate head-to-foot every three to six months. Don't flip a one-sided mattress.
  • Use a breathable, washable protector from day one. It's the cheapest life extension there is.
  • Keep it off the floor so it can breathe.

What a Warranty Actually Covers

Warranties cover defects — sagging past a stated depth, broken coils, seam failure. They do not cover comfort preference, stains, or damage from an unsupported frame. Read the sag threshold before you buy; it's the single number that tells you how confident the maker is.

"A mattress doesn't fail all at once. It fails one degree a night until you forget what rested feels like."
