King vs. California King: Which One Actually Fits Your House?

One is wider, one is longer, and picking wrong costs you either legroom or wall space. Here are the real dimensions, the room-size math, and which one tall Americans should buy.

Two large mattresses side by side in a bright farmhouse bedroom with a tape measure on the floor

People assume a California king is the bigger bed. It isn't — not by area. A standard king is four inches wider. A California king is four inches longer. That single trade is the entire decision, and it comes down to whether your problem is shoulders or feet.

The Numbers, Straight

  • Standard (Eastern) King: 76" wide x 80" long — 6,080 square inches
  • California King: 72" wide x 84" long — 6,048 square inches
  • Split King: two 38" x 80" twin XL halves — same footprint as a king

A standard king is two twin XLs pushed together, which is why it's the only king size that works with a split adjustable base without special ordering. That matters more than most people realize when they're shopping.

Buy a Standard King If...

  • You're under about 6'2" and want maximum elbow room
  • You sleep with a partner, a kid who migrates at 2 a.m., or a dog that owns the foot of the bed
  • You want a split adjustable base so each side raises independently
  • Your bedroom is wider than it is deep

Buy a California King If...

  • You're 6'2" or taller and your feet hang off a standard king
  • Your bedroom is long and narrow — the four inches of width you give back matter
  • You want a longer visual line in a big master with a lot of floor

Room Size Math

Leave at least 24 inches of walking room on any side you need to pass. That puts the practical minimum for a standard king at roughly 12' x 12', and for a California king at roughly 12' x 13'. If you can't clear both sides of the bed with an armful of laundry, you bought too much mattress.

Don't Forget the Sheets

King and California king sheets are not interchangeable. If you go Cal king, order Cal king. Our DreamFit line is made in the U.S.A. with patented corner bands and deep pockets sized for a 12" hybrid, so the fit holds even on an adjustable base.

What We'd Tell Our Own Family

Unless you're genuinely tall, buy the standard king. The extra width is the comfort you actually feel every night, and it keeps the door open to a split adjustable base later. The Patriot Bed is built in both sizes in the U.S.A. — same 12" quilted hybrid build, same edge support, same GREENGUARD-certified materials.
