A big number on a banner is not a guarantee. Trials and warranties are contracts, and the money lives in the exclusions. Read these four things before you buy any mattress from anybody.
1. The Break-In Requirement
Most trials require you to sleep on the mattress for a minimum window — often 21 to 30 nights — before you can start a return. That's actually reasonable: your body takes a few weeks to adapt to new support. Just know it exists so you don't get surprised.
2. Who Pays for the Return
- Is return pickup free, or is there a restocking or freight fee?
- Do you get a refund or store credit?
- Is the base, protector, or bedding refundable, or mattress only?
3. The Sag Threshold
Warranty claims for body impressions almost always require a measurable sag depth — commonly 1 to 1.5 inches with no weight on the bed. Anything shallower is called normal comfort settling. Know the number your warranty uses before you file.
4. What Voids It
- Stains — this is the number one denial. Use a protector from day one.
- Improper support — slats too far apart, a broken frame, or no center support on a king
- Removing the law tag
- Second-owner transfers — most warranties cover the original purchaser only
