Every mattress sold in America has to pass a federal flammability standard — 16 CFR Part 1633. That's a good rule. The question nobody at the big-box store wants to answer is how their $299 bed-in-a-box passes it.
The Cheap Way to Pass a Fire Test
The cheapest way to meet the standard is to wrap the foam core in a woven fiberglass sock under the cover. It works, and it's legal. The problem is what happens when that cover comes off. Homeowners who unzipped their mattress to wash the cover have ended up with fiberglass filaments through carpet, vents, and clothing — and remediation bills that ran into the thousands.
"Federal law requires mattresses to resist open flame. It does not require the manufacturer to tell you, in plain English, what they used to get there."

How to Check the Bed You Already Own
- Read the law tag. "Glass fiber," "fiberglass," or "silica" in the fiber content is your answer.
- Look for a cover tag that says DO NOT REMOVE COVER. That warning usually exists for a reason.
- Never unzip a cover to "just check." If it is fiberglass, opening it is the event you are trying to avoid.
- Cheap, very light, all-foam, shipped compressed in a box, no US factory named anywhere — that's the profile.
The Alternatives That Don't Use It
Rayon and silica-blend knit barriers, wool, and inherently flame-resistant fibers all pass the same federal test without loose glass filaments. They cost more. That's the entire reason the import crowd doesn't use them.
