The Guest Room Test: Would You Sleep in Your Own Spare Bed?

Family's coming. Here's how to set up a guest room that treats company like company — without overspending on a bed used twelve nights a year.

A tidy American guest bedroom with a fresh mattress, quilts, and a small flag

Hospitality is a American virtue and a Christian one, and most of us fail it in exactly one room. The guest bed is where the mattress goes to retire — the one that got replaced upstairs, sagging in the middle, with a plastic protector that crackles all night. Then Grandma sleeps on it for four nights over Christmas.

Run the Test

  • Lie down on it for twenty minutes. Not five seconds — twenty minutes, lights off.
  • Roll over. Does the whole bed move and creak?
  • Sit on the edge. Does it collapse out from under you?
  • Get up. Any stiffness? That's what your mother-in-law is getting for a week.

How Much Bed Does a Guest Room Need

  • Queen (60" x 80") — the default if the room can hold it; works for couples and solo guests
  • Full (54" x 75") — fine for one adult, tight for two
  • Twin XL (38" x 80") — good in a small room, and it's the size college kids are used to
  • Leave at least 24" of walking space on one side and clear the door swing

Company should get a real bed, not the one you rejected.

Medium-Firm Wins for Guests

You don't know how your company sleeps — side, back, stomach, hot, cold, bad hip. A medium-firm hybrid is the safest bet because it works acceptably for nearly everyone instead of perfectly for one person. Coils also make a shared guest bed livable: motion stays where it starts.

The Rest of the Room

  • Two pillows per guest at different lofts so they can pick
  • A quiet quilted protector, not a crinkly vinyl sheet
  • Extra blanket at the foot of the bed — people run cold in strange houses
  • A lamp within arm's reach and an outlet they can find in the dark
  • Clear the exercise equipment and the gift wrap out. It's a bedroom this week.

The Patriot Bed comes in Twin through Cal King, so the spare room can get the same American-built hybrid the master does. Take care of the people under your roof — that's what the roof is for.

"How you treat a guest in your home says everything. Start with the bed."
